PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ACICULAR PARTICLES CONTAINING AN IRON CARBIDE

Gamma Fe2O3 is treated with an alkaline compound (aquous solution) or coated with a Co compound and then contacted with Co or CO+H2 at 250- 400≦̸C. The coating with a Co or CO+H2 at 250-400≦̸C. The coating with a Co compound may be effected by dispersing the gamma Fe2O3 in an aquous solution of a Co salt, adding an alkali compound, filtering and drying. The material from this process can be used as a magnetic material in magnetic recording media or as a catalyst for forming aliphatic hydrocarbons from CO and H2. This process can give excellent magnetic properties.
