Workpiece machining system

The system simultaneously machines the opposite surfaces of workpieces W e.g. brake discs. Two machining centres 26 are disposed on a workpiece transfer path between a first inlet conveyor line 12a and a second outlet conveyor line 126. Each centre has two pairs of tools on flexible arms movable inwardly by actuator operated bolts for machining respective workpieces while holding and rotating the workpieces in the same attitude as that in which they are conveyed along the first and second conveyor lines. Such holding includes chucks with inner collets for gripping centre bores, and outer fingers for gripping the inner surfaces of the discs. The system also includes a transfer apparatus 18 for transferring the workpieces from the first conveyor line through the machining apparatus to the second conveyor line while maintaining the workpieces in the same attitude. The transfer apparatus has respective movable structures 125a, b with up/down workpiece supports in pairs, each having a centre bore locating pin and pivoting fingers with support plates for engaging underneath the workpieces. ……
