In a process for producing a feedstuff from animal blood, the blood is mixed with a sugar source, such as whey or starch, an inoculum of lactic acid bacteria is added and the mixture is allowed to ferment. Where starch is used as the sugar source a starch-reducing enzyme is added to the fermentation mixture. Before adding the other substances, the blood is allowed to clot and is then blended to a smooth consistency. Preferably, an antimycotic agent such as potassium sorbate is added to the fermentation mixture. Palatability enhancer such as chicken fat, butter fat or fructose may be added to the product. The product may be used as a foodstuff for dogs, cats, pigs and fish. |
