<p>O F T H E I N V E N T I O N "PATIENT LIFTING AND HOIST THEREFOR" A novel method of lifting a patient from a seated to a generally standing position employs a hoist comprising a support column 2 mounted on a mobile chassis 3. A pivotal lifting arm arrangement 11 projects from the column 2 and presents laterally spaced attachment points 13 for a padded sling 14 which is passed around the back of the seated patient 10 below the arms thereof. The hoist is positioned with knee abutment means 15, which are mounted on the column 2, located against the knees of the patient 10; and the feet of the patient 10 are placed on footrests 16 mounted on the chassis 3 on opposite sides of the column 2. A lifting mechanism 17 comprises a pivotal operating lever 18 connected to the arm arrangement 11 through a mechanical linkage which provides a mechanical advantage, such that operative movement of the lever 18 through 180.degree. from an upwardly projecting to a downwardly projecting position pivots the arm arrangement 11 upwardly through an angle of 60.degree. to 65.degree. thereby raising the seated patient 10 to a standing position on the footrests 16 while supported at the back and laterally located by the sling 14.</p> |
