Method and device for making a prereduced product suitable for final reduction in a reactor from material containing metal oxide. The material is preheated in a fluidized bed by means of hot exhaust gases from the subsequent prereduction stage. The hot material is melted and prereduced in a combustion chamber using hot reducing gases from a subsequent final reduction stage.
