PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF CINNAMIC ACIDS

A process for prepg. cinnamic acids comprises (a) hydrolyzing cinnamate esters with aq. soln. of alk. i.e. NaOH, KOH in a heterogeneous two-phase system at 40-120 deg.C in the presence of water, and (b) acid treating with mineral acids i.e. HCl, sulfuric acid to maintain pH of soln. below 4 after rxn. completion. Cinnamic acids are useful as epice, photosensitive resin and raw materials for org. or biochemical substances.
