C. engine comprises at least two engines (2, 7) Fig. 1 (not shown) driving a single common drive-shaft 1, Fig.2, each engine having pairs of opposed cylinders the pistons of which drive a crank-shaft (6, 11), the two crank-shafts being carried in a common crankcase (12) and each driving, through a drive-engagement and dogclutch device 13, 14 a common reduction gear 15 the output shaft of which forms the drive-shaft. The reduction gear 15 includes a gear-wheel driven through the devices 13, 14 and an intermediate gear from each crank-shaft. Each device 13, 14 includes a disc clutch and dog-clutch, the latter becoming operative as soon as the rotation speed of the drive-shaft is reached. To ensure improved dynamic balancing the dog-clutch may be caused to engage when the crank-shafts 6, 11 are in a predetermined angular relationship so that no two cylinders fire simultaneously. The left hand and right hand banks of cylinders of each engine may be respectively charged by the same turbine driven compressor and fuel is fed from single or twin fuel injection pumps to each cylinder bank. In another embodiment a third engine arranged above a ship propellor shaft drives the common drive-shaft through the reduction gearing. |
