A desired xylene isomer (A) is obtained by (a) passing a stream (I) contg. at least two xylene isomers (A and B) into an adsorptive xylene sepn. zone, and withdrawing a product stream (II) contg. (A) and a raffinate stream (III) contg. (B); (b) passing a feedstream (IV) contg. toluene, a recycle stream (V) and at least part of (B) in (III) to a catalytic transalkylation zone contg. a non-metallic transalkylation catalyst (e.g. a zeolite) operated at high severity conditions including hydrogen/hydrocarbon mole ratio more than 2:1 and temp. over 426≦̸C to form an effluent stream (VI) contg. benzene, toluene, xylenes and C9 aromatics.
