Production of formaldehyde

By combined oxidation and dehydration of CH3OH using air in the presence of steam at 550-750 degrees C and silver crystalline catalyst, the mole proportion of CH3OH to air being 1:1.8 to 1:20, the characterising features being (1) carrying out the oxidation in the presence of 0.2 to 1.0 mole. H2O and (2) using 1.0-1.65 mol. of inert gas per mol.
