PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound which is an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, photographic materials, etc. in high purity and yield in a short time, by reacting a relatively inexpensive omega-chloroacetophenone as a raw material with dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of a bromide as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:omega-Chloroacetophenone as a raw material is reacted with dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of a bromide, e.g. sodium bromide, potassium bromide or cobalt bromide, as a catalyst to prepare phenylglyoxal. The reaction temperature is 50-100 deg.C, preferably 70-90 deg.C. The bromide and unreacted dimethyl sulfoxide are recovered for reuse. The resultant dimethyl sulfide is oxidized to give dimethyl sulfoxide, which is further repeatedly used. |
