The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the combustion of hydrogen with oxygen in almost stoichiometric volume ratios by means of a flame in a closed and cooled combustion space, with water vapour and/or condensed water being produced. The object of the invention is to carry out the combustion safely and without the formation of oxides of nitrogen. The water formed should be practically uncontaminated by corrosion products. The object is achieved according to the invention by a superatmospheric pressure being produced in the combustion space by introducing a non-combustible gas with the exception of oxygen.
