The invention relates to a device for removing banknotes (111) from a pile (109) and for forwarding the banknotes (111) to a transport device (46) which follows the removal device (6). The device comprises a conveyor belt (116) which has a number of perforated suction zones (126, 128) which are arranged one behind the other in the longitudinal direction and are in each case mutually separated by unperforated intermediate zones (130, 132) lying in between. A suction chamber (124) is arranged to the front of the front end (140) of the pile. The arrangement is such that the front edge (36) and the rear edge (38) of a sucked-in banknote always lies on an unperforated intermediate zone (130, 132) of the conveyor belt (116), so that banknotes (111) which are situated behind the banknote (111) to be removed and project over its front or rear edge (36, 38) are not sucked in. The conveyor belt (116) is controlled by means of a number of sensors (172, 178) which are actuated by the banknote (111) or by the conveyor belt (116), or more precisely by the suction ports (141) formed in the conveyor belt.
