A method of manufacturing a two-ply flexible wood veneer panel for covering surfaces comprises covering a surface of a first veneer with an adhesive which is bonded to a second veneer with grains crossed under pressure and heat so as to ensure gluing over the entire opposed surfaces of the two veneers, the resulting panel being flexible in both directions, and choosing the thickness of each veneer, the moisture content of the veneers before bonding, and the bonding time so as to prevent the generation of stresses caused by swelling of the veneers and shrinkage of the glue or to have these stresses approximately cancel one another, whereby after bonding the panel is substantially flat. The veneers may be of beech wood 1 to 2 mm. thick and have a moisture content which is first reduced and then raised to between 6 and 12% before bonding. After bonding for a time between a few seconds and five minutes and at a temperature of over 100‹ C., preferably 120‹ C., the moisture content is between 5 and 12% and may be less than 5%. The adhesive may be a urea resin glue containing water, a phenol resin glue, or a heat fusion adhesive. The two-ply panel may be cooled to 80‹ C. after pressing. The panel may be used to cover walls, floors or ceilings and may have a transparent protective coating of synthetic plastic. The panel may have its moisture content raised to 8 to 12% before application to the wall &c. Methods of determining the desired moisture content and bonding time are described. |
