The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for monitoring the machining during the milling of metal materials. Here, it is often necessary to obtain information about the cutting depth during the milling or about the position of the cutter relative to the workpiece. In order to be able to carry out the monitoring during the machining itself, the invention provides for the cutter and the workpiece isolated from it to be connected in an electric measuring circuit so that a short circuit is made when the cutter engages in the workpiece. These short circuits trigger impulses which in relationship to the number of revolutions of the cutter enable information to be obtained about the cutting depth and the geometric position of cutter and workpiece even during the milling. Therefore predetermined positions of the cutter can be determined and in particular path corrections can be carried out, so that the cutter can be used for automatic processes.
