PURPOSE:To readily produce the subject compound, by reacting a haloethane with hydrogen using a catalyst, containing a platinum group element in combination with any of zirconium hafnium, titanium, niobium and tantalum and excellent in initial characteristics and durability. CONSTITUTION:A haloethane raw material, expressed by formula I (X is F or Cl; when X is F, Y and Z are Cl, F or H; when either of Y and Z is F, the other thereof is H or Cl; when X is Cl, either of Y and Z is F and the other thereof is Cl or H) and having 4-5 F atoms is reacted with hydrogen. In the process, a platinum group element and at least one element or compound selected from zirconium, hafnium, titanium, niobium and tantalum are used as a hydrogenation catalyst to provide a tetrafluoroethane expressed by formula II or III. The catalyst component is preferably supported on a carrier, such as active carbon or alumina. The reaction is preferably carried out at 120-450 deg.C in the vapor phase. |
