PURPOSE:To control musical sound characteristics according to the motion, position, etc., of a musical instrument main body in play by detecting a physical quantity which varies according to the operation of a musical instrument main body while the portable musical instrument is provided to the musical instrument main body and enables play, and controlling the musical sound characteristics according to the detection information. CONSTITUTION:A photodiode 41 is arranged oppositely to a LED (light emitting diode) 39 arranged in the body 13 of the electronic wind instrument 11 and a shutter 29 is arranged in the optical path between a pair of the LED 39 and photodiode 41 which constitute a photocoupler 39 and cuts off the optical path when said shutter is rotated by a weight 29 gravitationally to maintain an invariably perpendicular position. Its tilt angle is detected according to the operation of the portable musical instrument main body 13 itself that a player carries and plays and the musical sound characteristics are controlled according to the detection information (output voltage of the photodiode 41) from the detecting means (photocoupler) 43.
