Purification of a crude 3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl compd. (I,X= -SO2- or - CO-), which is 3,3'-dinitrobenzobenzophenone or 3,3'dinitrophenylsulphone and contains an isomeric compd. having a NO2 gp. at the O- and/or p-position, comprises treating with a lower alcohol and a base. The isomeric compd. is selectively converted to a corresp. alkoxy compd. and removed. The lower alcohol is pref. an aliphatic monohydric alcohol having 5C or less. The base is an alkali metal hydroxide, bicarbonate or bisulphite, e.g. NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3 or K2CO3, used at 1.5-5 equivs. The base may also be a metal alcoholate, used in pre-prepd form.
