Si-Metal alloys and Si-iron alloys are refined, for the removal of aluminium, calcium and titanium, by introducing an oxygen-containing process gas into the melt. To reduce the cost of the oxygen introduction, the gas is introduced through sheathed gas nozzles (3) installed in the bottom of the treatment vessel. Process gas, preferably oxygen, is introduced through the inner pipe of the sheathed gas nozzles, and sheathing gas, preferably nitrogen, through the outer pipe. With this mode of operation, a porous mushroom-shaped body (7) of solid silica, which prevents nozzle wear and bottom wear, is formed in front of the nozzles. <IMAGE> |
