[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises 6-isobornyl-3,4-xylenol and 6-exo-isocamphanyl-3,4-xylenol and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting 3,4-xylenol with camphene in the presence of stannic chloride as catalyst at a temperature of between 70 and 80‹ C., cooling the reaction mixture and extracting it with a mixture of benzene and water, removing the water layer, washing the benzene layer first with potassium hydroxide and then water until neutral, driving off the benzene, distilling the remaining mass and collecting the fraction which distils over at between 203 and 223‹ C. at 200 mm. Hg., recrystallizing this fraction in petroleum ether, dissolving the crystallized product in hexane and separating the 6-isobornyl-3,4-xylenol and 6-exo-isocamphanyl-3,4- xylenol in this product by chromatography on an alumina column using benzene as an element. |
