A high pressure fuel injection device including an accumulator type fuel injection nozzle (15) for an internal combustion engine (11). High pressure fluid is delivered to the accumulator chamber (33) by a reciprocating pump (16) and the amount of fuel discharged is controlled by controlling the discharge pressure of the high pressure pump (16). This is done by varying the timing phasing of the pump (16).
