A liquid/gas contact reactor 10 for the production of vinyl chloride is divided into sections by gas seals 103 which allow the downward flow of liquid but prevent the upward flow of gas. The seal is formed by the downward flowing liquid in containers 108 into which depending portion 105 dips. Liquid may be recycled up pipe 11 by lift gas from pipe 151, which gas may be used to heat or cool 'the liquid. 146 is a heating element. The apparatus may be used for the process disclosed in Specification 1,258,749 (see Division C2).</p> |
