PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for detecting the size of an original by varying the moving direction of a scanning means when plural detecting means detect a display position and when said means do not detect the position. CONSTITUTION:The detecting means 63a and 63b detect whether or not an original G lies in the range of an original platen 2, where a display means 53 provided on the scanning means 411 forms an image. According as the detecting means 63a and 63b detect or not that the original G lies in the display position, the moving direction of the scanning means 411 is changed such that the detecting means 63a and 63b can detect the size of the original. When the scanning means moves from the display position in the image forming range of the display means 53, detecting the size of the original starts. Thus, the time for requiring to detect the size of the original can be shortened. |
