A repetitive pattern is imparted to the surface of a continuous coloured fabric or similar material by passing it between a support roller having a surface with the pattern relief having a tangential speed matching the fabric throughput rate and an opposing roller having an abrasive surface moving with a tangential speed greater than that at which the fabric moves as it passes over. The moulded roller applies a sustained pressure to maintain in contact with the abrasive roller. USE - Esp. applicable to treatment of fabrics which are coloured in depth and have been superficially treated with one or more contrasting colourants. Applicable to woven or non-woven fabrics, esp. to impart effects of local wear, e.g. for new 'used' or 'stone-washed' jeans.
