A climbing plate is made by making a model of it from a rigid block of material such as synthetic foam, coating the surface of the model with a thick layer containing granular filler, coating the model to take a casting of it, immersing the model in molten material to make a mould, withdrawing the model and applying the casting to the base of the mould, and moulding the climbing plate in the mould to give it a texture similar to rock. A plate made by the process is also claimed. The casting is pref. of glass fibre and polyester resin or polyurethane foam. The model is pref. of polyurethane or polystyrene foam, and the coating of epoxy resin and sand.
