PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for diphenic acid, liquid crystal compound, etc., in high selectivity, efficiency and purity, in a short time under mild reaction condition, by using a specific catalyst supported on a carrier and hydrogenating industrially available phenanthrene. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by hydrogenating phenanthrene or a phenanthrene-containing mixture under a hydrogen pressure of 50-300kg/cm<2>, preferably 100-200kg/cm<2> at 100-400 deg.C, preferably 150-300 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst containing palladium and/or platinum as active metals and containing aluminum oxide supported on a carrier. |
