A video signal (1) for multi-head (8) recording is fed to a filter which extracts its chrominance component (15). The remaining luminance component (14) is fed to a delay network (9) controlled by a time base (10) synchronised with the original signal (1). A mixer stage (5) recombines the luminance and chrominance signals after the latter has been approp. treated in a variable-gain amplifier (16). The result is frequency-modulated (6) and amplified (7) before application to the recording heads (8,8'). During replay, a pulse-interval linear demodulator feeds the head (8,8') outputs to a low-pass filter. These reconstitute a colour video signal on the true basis of the original input (1).
