To transmit stereoscopic television images with reduced bandwidth and, respectively, bit rate, an additional signal is formed from the L and R signals at the transmitting end and transmitted together with the L or R signal. The L and R signal includes the left-hand and, respectively, right-hand image information to be offered to the left and, respectively, right eye. The additional signal contains the displacement vectors which are in each case formed by comparing the L and R signals for a particular image block of pixels with respect to the displacement of the picture information (disparity) in both signals. At the receiving end, the R and, respectively, L signal not transmitted is reconstructed from the transmitted additional signal and the one transmitted L or, respectively, R signal.
