Overhead welding method is useful in cases, e.g. shipbuilding, where turning of the workpiece is an expensive procedure and the other welding seam side is inaccessible. Sheet metal consisting of unalloyed or low-alloyed structural steels are welded by an electric arc method utilising dispensable electrodes in a protective atmosphere. Welding is conducted at 40-60 v. and with a current greater than 250 amps., pref. between 250 and 500 amps. CO2 is employed as the protective gas and the welding wire is 0.8-1.2 mm. in diameter. |
