Supertwist liquid crystal display elements having superior characteristic curve slopes are obtained if the nematic liquid crystal mixture satisfies the following conditions: - nematic phase range of at least 60@C, - viscosity of 30 mPa.s or less and - DELTA epsilon / epsilon T < 1.5, where DELTA epsilon means the dielectric anisotropy and epsilon T means the dielectric constant in the direction of the short axis of the liquid crystal molecules.
