Eutectic iron-titanium alloys were smelted in an arc furnace and then ground to give powders of a sprayable grain size of 45-93 mu m. Cast iron and steel substrates were coated with this powder by low-pressure plasma-spraying. During a subsequent remelting with a CO2 laser, the sintered materials TiN and TiC were formed in the melting bath, which was additionally top-blown with a reaction gas (N2). By means of these sintered materials, a surface hardness of 1000-1100 HV was achievable in a surface layer of 0.5-0.8 mm thickness. Applications and the transferability of such inexpensive sintered material coatings are discussed. |
