To incinerate effluent, containing organic constituents, in an atomising burner, the effluents are mixed with compressed air in a mixing nozzle prior to entry into the burner and are injected into the burner flame so that the effluent/air mixture leaves the burner port in the form of a droplet vortex layer, the effluent being heated under pressure to above 100 DEG C prior to formation of the droplet vortex layer and a pressure difference of at least 0.5 bar being maintained between the effluent feedpipe in the burner and the combustion chamber.
