<p>A motility scanner is disclosed for characterizing the motion of sperm, bacteria, particles suspended in flowing fluids and the like. The motility scanner preferably is mounted in a portable housing (26). A disposable specimen holder (50) allows external loading and positioning on the heated specimen support (16). The illumination source preferably includes a single LED (162) combined with a small source aperture (164), functioning as a collimator in directing all of the emanating illumination onto the specimen, with both directly transmitted light (170) and light scattered (172) by the specimen being received by an imaging lens (176) of the optical system. A movable plate (182) provided with a centrally disposed retarding member and/or attenuating member (186) is designed to be located at the plane conjugate to the plane of the small source aperture (164).</p> |
