After probing (sampling) the waste paper bales, these are shredded and the waste paper is then subjected to washing, connected with sedimentation, in order preferably to separate metallic foreign materials. In this case, the sedimentation trough has a screw conveyor which feeds the metallic foreign materials to a heavy-dirt trap after these have been separated from the waste paper via washing reinforced by means of spray-nozzles. Conveyor devices fitted with conveying paddles convey the waste paper to the outlet end of the sedimentation trough, where thickening of the fibre suspension is carried out by means of a dewatering screw.
