A gas-heating device for coke ovens, consisting exclusively of a lean-gas heating system, can nevertheless be supplied with rich gas or lean gas, if there is a blast furnace gas supply from a metallurgical coking plant. For this purpose, flue gas is taken via a by-pass line from the flue gas duct and combined in a mixing station with the rich gas supplied in the rich gas line. The precise rate is determined via orifice plates in both lines and a valve in the rich gas line is controlled via a controller in such a way that an exact mixing ratio is always ensured in the mixing station. Via downstream measuring instruments, the quality of the lean gas can then also still be varied under control by corresponding feeding of mixed gas or rich gas, so that coke oven operation which is advantageous in quality and in the output of nitrogen oxides is possible. <IMAGE>
