The invention concerns a working cylinder which can be locked in a continuously adjustable manner and has a cylinder body, a cylinder base and a cylinder cap as well as a working piston movably arranged in the cylinder body and connected to a piston rod, the piston rod being led to the outside through the cylinder base, and the cylinder base and the cylinder cap each having a pressure-medium passage leading into the cylinder body. Such known working cylinders are to be developed according to the invention in such a way that they can be locked in any position, that is, in a continuously adjustable, mechanical and positive manner. This is achieved according to the invention owing to the fact that the piston rod has a longitudinal bore which also passes through the piston and has tooth-like or wave-like profiling of the inner wall. A tube held in a stationary position and having a rod displaceably arranged therein is guided into the longitudinal bore, the rod having at least one ball circulation passage which runs radially and parallel to the longitudinal extent of the rod and has at least two openings leading out at a distance from one another at the rod surface. A slot of corresponding length in the wall of the tube held in a stationary position is allocated to the openings.
