An aryloxyalkanol of formula <FORM:1047109/C2/1> in which R is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or phenyl and R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a compound having approximately 1.9-2.25 hydroxy groups per molecule, the reaction conditions being as follows:- (a) a temperature in the range 40-160 DEG C.; (b) a molar ratio of aryloxyalkanol to formaldehyde of from 2:1 to 10:1; and (c) a catalyst to formaldehyde molar ratio of up to 1:1. Formaldehyde is preferably employed as para-formaldehyde but may be used as trioxane or formalin solution. Suitable acid catalyst are, for example, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and acid clays. Examples are given of the preparation of compounds having approximately 2 hydroxy groups per molecule using as starting materials: (a) phenoxypropanol, (b) phenoxyethanol, and (c) o-tolyloxypropanol. |
