Derivatives of 2,3-difluorobenzoic acid of formula (I), in which R<1> and R<2> each independently denote an alkyl group with 1 to 15 C atoms, in which one or two non-neighbouring CH2 groups can also be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -CH=CH- and/or -C=C-, and A<1> and A<2> each independently denote an unsubstituted 1,4-phenylene or a 1,4-phenylene substituted by one or two fluorine atoms, in which one or two CH groups can also be replaced by N, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, or one of the two groups A<1> and A<2>, also denote a single bond are suitable as components for liquid crystal phases.
