PURPOSE:To obtain the title quaternary salt excellent in water solubility and useful as a material for a cosmetic composition, by copolymerizing N- vinylpyrrolidone with a specified quaternary ammonium salt of an alkyl acrylate derivative. CONSTITUTION:An aminoalkyl acrylate derivative of formula I (wherein R<1> is H or methyl, R<2> is a 1-4C lower alkylene which may have a hydroxyl group, and R<3> is methyl or ethyl) is reacted with 0.5-1.0mol., per mol. of the obtained product,of a dialkyl sulfate of the formula: (R<4>)2SO4 (wherein R<4> is R<3>) at 15-40 deg.C for 30min-2hr to obtain a quaternary ammonium salt of an alkyl acrylate derivative (b) of formula II. 60-90mol.% N-vinylpyrrolidone (a) is copolymerized with 10-40mol.% component (b) and 0-30mol.% third monomer (c) (e.g., acrylic acid) in the presence of 0.05-2.0wt.%, based on the total amount of the monomers, polymerization initiator at 50-100 deg.C to obtain a quaternary salt of a vinylpyrrolidone copolymer of formula III (wherein A is a component (c) unit other than units of components (a) and (b), x is 60-90mol.%, y is 10-40mol.%, z is 0-30mol.%, and x+y+z=100). |
