A prodn. of an embossing cylinder having a silicone rubber surface with a negative impression of grain design, comprises (a) providing a sheet of natural leather, pouring liq. silicone rubber, vulcanizing the rubber, and stripping embossing from the leather; (b) laying a thermoplastic sheet on the grained surface prod. (a) and applying pressure and heat at 180-250≦̸C; (c) stripping embossed thermoplastic sheet and forming it into a tube with the enbossed surface outside and edges abutting; (d) subjecting the film beneath the matrix; (e) pouring vuleanized silicone rubber on the embossed surface; (f) stripping the blanket from the embossed surface and (g) gluing the blanket, embossed side out, to the surface of a cylinder.
