1,149,747. Electrochemical cells. LEESONA CORP. 15 Sept., 1966 [30 Sept., 1965], No. 41288/66. Heading H1B. An electrochemical cell comprises an anode, a cathode, a fluid electrolyte chamber between the anode and cathode and a metallic diaphragm separating the electrolyte chamber into an anodic compartment and a cathodic compartment, the diaphragm being maintained at a fixed electrical potential to render it passive. The electrochemical cell is preferably a fuel cell and the fixed potential is suitably maintained by connecting the diaphragm and one of the electrodes to an external source or by means of a slide contact on a resistor connecting the anode and cathode. The electrolyte may be sulphuric or phosphoric acid and the diaphragm of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, ruthenium, rhodium or alloys thereof, titanium, stainless steel, tantalum, zirconium or iron. |
