A substrate for the print head of an ink jet printer includes a plastic base (28), a metallization layer (30) overlying the plastic base, and a dielectric structure (32) overlying the metallization layer. A thin film resistor (18) is deposited over the substrate, as required. Acceptable materials include polyimide plastic for the base (28), copper or nickel for the metallization layer (30), and a bilayer construction of silicon dioxide overlying chromium or titanium for the dielectric structure.
