An automatically-operable cutting head for cutting equal lengths from a continuously travelling tube 48 of synthetic material comprises a mandrel 46 carrying a sleeve 58 coupled thereto by means of a spring 52, bearings 5, 6 mounted on a pedestal 3 adapted to be entrained against the action of a spring 8 in the direction of travel of the material, the bearing 6 containing controllable clamping plungers 42 as well as guide rollers 35 and the bearing 5 surrounding a rotatable shaft 14 having an integral cylindrical plate 17 with a bore 18 containing a plunger 19 fitted with a knife 31, and means operable by a contact 60 located in the path of the material to be cut for controlling the actuation of the plungers 42 and of the cutting knife. Several axially-spaced plates 17 may be provided. Each knife, which is in the form of a flat triangular tool, may be rotated or be reciprocated or be stationary. Further, the knife may be inclined with its point trailing contrary to the direction of axial motion of the material. Also, the knife may be attached to a holder which is axially rotatable and locatable in a particular position. The head may alternatively be used for cutting strip material. |
