The casting furnace comprises a sealed enclosure containing an open- topped crucible surrounded by a high frequency induction melting heater coil. Above the crucible, a vertical casting nozzle, incorporating a water cooling jacket, passes through the top of the enclosure. Copper is placed in the crucible, the enclosure evacuated and the copper melted. Crucible or nozzle is moved vertically until the nozzle dips into the molten metal. Inert gas is introduced into the chamber under pressure forcing the copper up through the nozzle where it solidifies. This method produces a product free from oxide inclusions etc., of high strength suitable for further drawing operation.
