In a device for receiving essentially rectangular single sheets and for depositing the latter in an orderly manner in a container (14) which is arranged in a housing and has an inlet opening (34) which is connected by a transport path (18) for the serial conveyance of the single sheets with a feed opening of the housing, the inlet opening in at least one edge direction of the sheets is smaller than the corresponding dimensions of the sheets. At the end of the transport path (18, 24), in front of the inlet opening, is arranged a stacking device (26) with a stack-bearing surface (30) for forming a sheet stack in which the sheets lie upright on the stack-bearing surface (30), parallel to the inlet opening (34). To introduce the sheets into the container (14), a pushing device (48) is provided which can be adjusted in the direction of the inlet opening and by means of which a sheet stack formed on the stack-bearing surface (30) can be pushed through the inlet opening of the container (14), the sheet stack curving in the process. ……
