PURPOSE:To provide the title polymer giving chiral smectic phase over a wide range of temperatures, having quick response nature to electric field and memory function, good in film-formability, thus useful for display elements, etc., with specified molecular weight, containing plural benzene rings in the side chain. CONSTITUTION:A copolymerization is carried out between (A) a monomer of formula I {R<1> is of formula II [R<2> is optically active group of the formula COOR<3> (R<3> is of formula III (m and n are each integer 0-9; q is 0 or 1; R<4> and R<5> are each CH3, halogen, CN, etc.)), the formula OCOR<3>, or R<3>], formula IV (Q is COO or OCO), etc.; k is integer 1-30} and (B) a second monomer of formula V [R<6> is H, CH3 or Cl; R<7> is of the formula COOR<8> (R<8> is 1-10C alkyl, 6-10C aryl, etc.), OR<8>, R<8>, etc.] to obtain the objective liquid crystal polymer of formula VI (a and b are each positive real number satisfying the relationship: a+b=1, a/b=1/4-9/1) with a number-average molecular weight of 2,000 to 200,000. |
