PURPOSE:To prevent abrupt starting even at unusually high engine speed by a method wherein, as a speed change lever is switched from a neutral position to a starting range when a brake is not operated, a speed change step with a smaller speed reduction ratio than that in an usual starting state is selected. CONSTITUTION:In CPU of an electronic control device, as a shift lever (switch SSL) is switched from a N range to a D range in a vehicle stoppage, state the largest speed change step is selected so as to obtain the maximum accelerating performance. But, in the case that, in the off-state of a brake switch SWB with a braking pedal not stepped in, a shift lever SSL is switched form the N range to the D range, the speed change step with a smaller speed reduction ratio than that in an usual starting state, for example, third speed step or fourth step, is selected. Accordingly, even at unusually high engine speed, it is possible to prevent abrupt starting. |
