[Also in Division G3] The gas flow to the burners of a furnace is controlled to maintain the product of the Wobbe index and the square root of the pressure constant. The flow of gas is controlled by a valve 1 under the control of a regulator 3 which receives a signal of the gas pressure from a gauge 2 and the Wobbe index from a Wobbemeter 5. Gas is supplied to the Wobbemeter 5 through a regulator 5a which includes an orifice and a valve for maintaining a constant pressure drop across the orifice. The Wobbemeter is supplied with air at a constant flow and the temperature rise of the air, which is heated by the burnt gas in the meter is a measure of the Wobbe index. This is compared with a set value and a signal proportional to the difference is fed to regulator 3 and combined with a signal representing the square root of the pressure to control the valve 1. The gas flow fed to the furnace through lines 8 and 14 is adjusted by a regulator 9 in response to a temperature regulator. |
