An electro-chemical half-cell has an ionpermeable polymeric membrane comprising a durable naturally-hydrophobic polymer treated to make it hydrophilic, i.e. either:- (A), a hydrated hydrophobic polymer or (B) a non-hydrateable hydrophobic polymer loaded with particulate material to make it hydrophilic . The hydrated polymer may be loaded to improve its conductivity. Examples are given, typically for:- (A) a rubber or plastics containing an aldehyde, phenolic, amide or carboxylic group, which may be loaded with e.g. carbides, silicates, metaloxides, nobel metals, aluminates or a salt such as sodium or potassium chloride. (B) polyfluoralkanes, polyethylene, P.V.C., silicone and fluorocarbon rubbers loaded with the above salts, or P. T. F. E. with glass fibres. Cell Construction Any of the above materials may be moulded to form the entire cell body (about #" thick) and which acts as a junction membrane all over. |
