2,2-Dimethyl-chroman-3-ol cpds. of formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts where they contain phosphono or carboxy gps. are new. A = -CH=CH-E=CH- or -N=CR1-CR2=CR3-; Z = halo, CN, MeCO, CF3CO, NO2, COOH, phosphono, dialkoxyphosphoryl or alkoxycarbonyl; the alkoxy and alkylthio gps. have 1-3C: R1 = H, Me or OH; R2 and R3 are each H or Me, but only one of R1, R2 and R3 can be Me; R4 = H, halo, Me or OH. Specifically Z = cyano.
