An automatic coupling mechanism for two separate guide rail sections, e.g. for an industrial monorail system has the two rail sections (12b, 12c) connected by a pair of sub-assemblies (28, 30) which are joined to the adjacent ends of the rail sections. Each of the sub-assemblies comprises a pivoted lock (40,50) equipped with a counterweight which ensures the automatic operation of the locks to fix the rail sections when they are brought together. One of the sub-assemblies (30) carries two lock release elements (64,66) which release the locks automatically when the rail sections are separated. The rail sections can be accommodated in an automatic storage/assembly unit until required for use. ADVANTAGE - More convenient storage, transport and assembly.
